George W. Bush, In Muqtada al-Sadr's Words:

Your occupation is no different than the destructor's* oppression, you ruined the reputation of Westerners in the East and if no one told you that, I am now. All this is because of your reckless actions. Your army is crushing the honorable and faithful, and they step on heads and flags and holy sites and religious books. Is that what Christ, peace be upon him, ordered you to do and you claim being ordered?

Bush, you planted violence, hatred, hostility and strife all over the world. Are you capable of ending this? I say no, you are absolutely not. Your people are scared in their schools and universities and are on the look out in towers and terrified when abroad. Is this how you treat nations, you enemy of the nations?

*The Destructor is how Shiites refer to Saddam Hussein.

Issues Faced By Widows of Iraq Veterans

Here is an excerpt from a Chat session about Veteran's Benefits:

(12:08pm) Barbara C.: We seem to be getting closer to curing the inequity endured by widows of service members who died from a 100% service connected disability whereby, our SBP was eliminated once we were entitled to DIC. This happened to me since the DIC was higher than the SBP that my late husband had selected and paid premiums on. The premiums were refunded to me, without interest. If this bill is passed and enacted into law, how can I have the SBP reinstated to be received along with the DIC?

Ana S.: Barbara I checked with Phil Odom (our new lobbyist on SBP) and he said that there are two bills in Congress that would eliminate the SBP/DIC offset. There is a House bill, H.R. 1589, which would require a proportional amount of SBP back payments based on the life expectancy of the survivor. The Senate bill, S. 935, would prohibit any back payments S. 935 also has a companion bill in the House, H.R. 1927.

So we are waiting to see which bill passes, we hope one does.

CAN YOU IMAGINE A GRIEVING WIDOW TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OUT OF THIS?

How To Achieve Peace In The Middle East

RESPONSE TO SOMEONE'S BLOG ON MILITARY AIRCRAFT:

Evan on 17 April 2007 at 10:56 am

I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade here, but can someone tell me how some new aeroplane is going to help us beat al-Qaeda?

I mean, they don’t even have an airforce, right? Their preferred methods of attack are hijacked civilian aircraft, IED’s and suicide bombers. Real down and dirty stuff.

Some new killer jet with all the bells and whistles imaginable on it won’t stop those sorts of attacks.

What will win it for us, if indeed the conflict is “winnable” in military terms, is a political solution to Palestine, a complete re-jigging of our approach to dealing with the Mid-East (to starve al-Qaeda of its political air) and some top-notch intelligence and detective work (to find and catch Osama and his homicidal pals).

So, no disrespect to all the Curtis Le Mays on this thread, but air power didn’t win us the Vietnam War and it sure as hell won’t win us this one either.

WAR: LIVES AND MONEY WASTED FOR THE RICH

YOUR MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN

The United States government is spending tens of billions of dollars to build a new U.S. embassy in Baghdad. The project has been going on for years. The basic design appearance is that of a huge concrete fortress surrounded by not one or two but three very thick concrete walls. Given all that protection, what building do you think the Iraqi people will choose to trash in the days immediately following the U.S. troop withdrawal?

Did the Viet Cong leave our embassy in Saigon untouched after the last Marine climbed aboard a helicopter? How well do you think the Afghanis took care of the U.S. embassy in Kabul during the years of Taliban rule? Think the U.S. Embassy in Tehran was kept in great condition for all those years?

Diplomatic missions only work when there is true ongoing diplomacy with a nation. When the talks break down you can expect everything else to get broken down fairly quickly.

NEW STRATEGY: NON-NEGOTIATION

Today, the leaders of some countries are adopting a new diplomatic strategy. They are refusing to even engage in talks with another country unless one or more demands are totally met before the talks even begin. That is not negotiation, that is bullying.

The result of this "refusal-to-even-talk-strategy" is usually ten thousand or a hundred thousand dead people buried in cemeteries all over the world. Clifden Memorial 00008

Another result is a trillion dollars lost. You cannot even imagine how much money a trillion dollars is but rest assured it could be used to build thousands of hospitals, schools, and homes.

Instead that trillion dollars is being used to kill lives and destroy homes, schools, and hospitals.

All because a few leaders just could not sit down and talk their differences over.

A HORNET'S NEST

The people who say we cannot stop making war now have a valid point. Once you stir up a hornet's nest, you can never really just walk away. You either have to destroy the nest, typically with fire or pesticides, or else run away real fast. You should have thought of that before you stirred up those stinging insects in the first place.

You did not think that by toppling their queen you would be welcomed into their hive with open antenna, did you?

Sometimes the pesticides and fire do not seem to have the right effect on the hive. If that does not stop the hornets from stinging you, you may have no choice but to run away. Be careful, those hornets will likely chase you for a quite a distance before they give up. Remember, they can fly anywhere they want to rather quickly. Be careful not to lead them into the neighbor's yard.

THE FINAL DEFEATNuclear Blast 1945

War is not diplomacy, it is undiplomatic leaders sending poor people to die for the financial gain of the rich. Blood money is what they call the proceeds of war. There are always thousands of people eager to make money from the next war.

War is an ancient tribal practice dating back to the beginning of the human race. As long as humans continue to make war on each other they cannot be considered "civilized." They obviously have not taught their young to be civil with each other.

It is quite likely, almost certain in fact, that war will be the cause of the end of the human race. Like the dinosaurs, the human race was given a chance to see if it could peacefully exist on earth. The humans failed that test. The pity is that we will destroy so many innocent species with our final acts of war.

Oh What A Tangled Web Gonzales Weaves

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales recently announced that he will "be focused on what's important for the American people."

Mr. Bush responded to Gonzales' testimony by saying these words:
He answered every question he could possibly answer, honestly answer, in a way that increased my confidence in his ability to do the job.
White House
Gonzales claimed not to be able to remember salient facts 74 times during his Congressional testimony. If he is not a liar he must be suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Either way Gonzales is unfit to serve as Attorney General.

Republican senators including Arlen Spector, John Sununu, Tom Coburn, and Jeff Sessions are insisting that Gonzales resign immediately.

Some conservative talk show hosts claim this entire affair is politically-motivated. If that is true, how do the 5 conservative GOP senators fit into that view?

The American people want a Justice Department that is not being led by an outright liar. When you sit before Congress and claim not to remember firing your top employees that is not telling the truth. The Attorney General sat before Congress twice and told bald-face lies to the American people. He refuses to acknowledge the truth about the politically-motivated dismissals of some of his top-performing lawyers.

What sort of consequences could a dishonest chief attorney lead to?

What sort of president tolerates liars in his cabinet?

How can a government function when most citizens do not trust the words coming from the top officials?

Karl Rove Under Investigation, Again and Again...

The LA Times and Washington Post report that the U.S. Office of Special Counsel is going to start investigating Karl Rove. Rove is well-known as the puppeteer pulling the strings on the George Bush doll we call our U.S. President.

The investigation is not expected to reveal any findings until 2015. Nevertheless Dick Cheney has ordered his replacement for fall guy Scooter Libby to dig up some dirt on anyone that works at the Special Counsel offices.

Karl Rove has been using government employees, working on taxpayer's time, to interfere with elections nationwide. The U.S. Attorney Firing debacle is only the latest in a long string of Rove's politically motivated actions impacting the lives of every U.S. citizen.

Rove has long been accused of being the president's right arm, for that matter Bush's left arm, brain, and balls. Rove's e-mails seem to disappear whenever he is accused of doing something wrong. Every White House has political aims but Rove moved the headquarters of the Republican National Committee into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. He uses RNC e-mail to cover-up his deceptions because that e-mail is set to automatically delete all illegal messages. When Rove revealed the identity of a CIA agent everyone overlooked that gross violation of the Espionage Act. When he ordered Attorney General Gonzales to fire attorneys that were not willing to work under Republican Party orders, he may have gone too far.

Does anyone in Washington,D.C. know anything about the Hatch Act? It is illegal for federal employees to conduct political activities.

Rove knows his time as the de-facto unelected U.S. President is drawing to a close. Expect his actions to get more desperate as federal prosecutors demand more of his time. He even flipped out on musician Sheryl Crow last weekend. This is a man on the edge, expect more fireworks in the days ahead. Rove's legacy of a failed war for oil, failed torture policy, failed Social Security privatization, and failed mid-term elections will follow him no matter where he goes. At least a job at Halliburton or SAIC will be there to pay the legal bills once the disgraceful Bush, er Rove Presidency grinds to a halt.

Virginia Tech and Homicidal Drug Side Effects

Virginia Tech murderer Cho not only enjoyed watching violent movies, he took specific drugs prescribed for psychological disorders. For years the government and pharmaceutical firms have known about the detrimental side-effects of many of these drugs. Suicidal and homicidal drug side-effects are not something we should be overlooking. Conveniently the police refuse to name the specific type of drug Cho was taking.

The Lessons of Virginia Tech

UNTIE THE KNOTS

Hundreds, no thousands, perhaps millions of people trying to untie the Gordian knot tied by one deeply disturbed young man. Everyone wants to try to figure out the meaning of this horrific, macabre painting left behind.

This is not the first small town to experience a massacre at the town school. In Bath, Michigan, an angry man took the lives of 44 people, mostly children. In Dunblane, Scotland, a man killed 16 little children and their teacher. Two spoiled rich kids slaughter their classmates in Colorado. Just last year a man shot 5 little girls at an Amish school in Pennsylvania. Why schools? Why children? Why do these men go on killing rampages in schools instead of seeking help?

In this case the artist was cold and calculating and he went about his business as publicly as Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Instead of leaving cloth hanging about a park this boy left otherwise healthy bodies strewn dead about the halls of learning. He shattered the lives of the friends and relatives of his victims. He even put together and mailed a publicity package designed to make him a posthumous global demon. Of course the networks complied with his posthumous request. The television and movie industry loves to make money from violence, real or imaginary. Cho makes the characters played by Jack Nicholson or Kiefer Sutherland seem timid and less frightening by comparison. There is no doubt a Hollywood script writer is working on the Virginia Tech Massacre movie right now. People can always be counted on to watch.
Eastport Tug o' War 26821
In more than 35 years of photography I have learned to examine photographs closely. You develop a sense about what was streaming through the model's mind at the time the close-up photograph was taken. You carefully learn what to say to induce the expressions your client wants to see in the photographs. You can accurately read an image, if you know what to look for.

For a short period of time I worked in a camera store, operating the huge photo printing machine in the back. After you see thousands of people's snapshots go past there is little left to surprise you. People sometimes drop off film containing the most intimate moments of their lives. People from all parts of Asia take more pictures than people from any other part of the world. Hunters take pictures of each other with their guns and with their kills. Kids take pictures of each other with the strangest expressions on their faces. It is difficult to purge some images from your thoughts.

The person in these pictures, Mr Cho, displays very little emotion, other than hatred. Most of the photographs are clearly that of an empty mind. He is not thinking about girls or something he learned in class or his family. Mr. Cho appears to have taken self-pity to the most extreme limits. In the end there must have been very little going on in his mind other than rote repetition of scenes from a grotesque play for which only he knew the words and actions.

MAKE SAFETY NETS

People get sick all the time. If we claim to be a society than we must be certain we all have social lives. When you are visiting friends or family do you just ignore someone's serious illness? Of course, not, you talk about the situation, in a polite manner, but you talk about whatever it is you see going wrong.

Hey I noticed you keep falling asleep, are you getting enough rest? Your eye looks badly swollen, have you seen a doctor for that? Excuse me but for months you have not said a word in my class or any other class or to any other person at this school, is everything OK?

Parents know more about their children than anyone else. If good parents see their child is deeply disturbed about something, totally withdrawn for months on end, do they ignore it? I realize teenagers are prone to all sorts of emotional outbursts and periods of silence but typically even these come in waves that soon pass. It is parents that know the difference between a mood swing and some deeper disturbance. Responsible parents would seek out help for their afflicted child as quickly as possible.

UNWIND GUNS AND TROUBLED YOUNG PEOPLE

I once was a member of a jury for a trial about two teenagers that shot themselves. This tragedy occurred in the 1990's in Rockville, Maryland. Like the tragedy at Virginia Tech, many people were quick to state that they knew these two teenagers were out of step with society. The trial was even an attempt to throw blame at the school counselors who knew the two girls were unstable and considering suicide. The father knew, the neighbors knew, the friends knew, everybody had known about these two girls for a long time. The school even put them in a facility with all the other troubled kids. The parents did not have enough time to spend with the children. One of the parents kept a loaded handgun at home. You fill in the ending to that story.

SECURE YOUR FIREARMS

In regards to firearms, the United States needs to carefully start learning from the rest of the world. The crimes committed with guns in this country leave us open to comparison with the tribal areas of Pakistan and Darfur in Sudan. European cities, not just London, but most of the continent experiences far fewer gun-related homicides than the U.S.. Hunting is still practiced by those that want to hunt in those places. Easily concealed semi-automatic handguns are simply not sold and not permitted without ample regulation and reason. In places as far ranging as Australia and India the penalty for just possessing illegal guns is many years in jail.

Arguments about protecting civil liberties taken from the U.S. Bill of Rights are valid. Please keep a musket or perhaps a rifle in your home if you feel that insecure about a possible revolution or invasion of your home. If you must carry a gun for business consider that there are alternatives to carrying large amounts of cash all around town. If you still need to be armed be certain to practice using your properly registered gun. Keep it stored safely when not in use, never fail to consider the consequences of tragedy it presents. It is a wonder so many people besides law enforcement officers even tolerate handguns in a family home.

If you think having everyone toting an automatic weapon around is a solution to all crime you are badly mistaken. The proliferation of handguns more often leads to needless death than convenient protection from an impending threat.

If you consider yourself an informed citizen you should give a little more thought to gun ownership. Don't wait for the government to force a decision on you. Does it make sense for you to own a handgun? Do you have children in your home? If you must keep a gun how often do you practice using it?

Do you live in a rural area where the threat of animals or even other humans concerns you? I knew a man that lived on the edge of a desert in New Mexico. His handgun came in handy when the rattlesnakes got in the house but his rifle proved more accurate. When he got married and had children, his handguns were sold and the rifle was always kept on the highest rungs of the gun rack. He also moved out of the desert.

Clean up your gun situation if you have too many of them lying around the house. If you hunt be a safe hunter. These were not the causes of this situation but sloppy gun owners do contribute to the number of unnecessary gun-related deaths each year.

LEARN THE PROFESSOR'S LAST LESSON

These young and old people lost their lives as a result of something that could have been prevented. The engineering professor or the German professor would have wanted everyone to learn something from their last moments alive. Their last act was to teach us all something but we do not get to ask questions in this class.

Deep down, Mr. Cho and other people knew there was something wrong with him. It does not make anyone right or wrong for not getting help. People can be quite sick and still remain ignorant of the severity of their illness. We all just need to react more quickly when we see the signs. It is too late if we simply wait until the kettle boils over.

Parents are on the front line in this struggle all of us face. Nobody wants to suffer a pointless death as a result of an errant child. Learn a little more about your child than you know now, is that so much to ask? When Mom and Dad work full-time the moments you do have together become more precious.

Technology may yet offer us all one more safety net. We all know the government is collecting every piece of data it can about all of us in some desperate attempt to root out a terrorist. Would it be so difficult to query a few databases and determine the registered gun owners that are receiving psychiatric treatment? Is it an invasion of privacy to intervene before your office or the neighborhood school becomes a firing range?

Get out in your world more often. Turn off the violent movies, television or video games. Meet the people that share the part of the planet you live on. If someone in your life seems withdrawn and sad, make a little more effort to open them up some. When you think you have done all you can to help someone or yourself, ask someone else for a their opinion. Oh that someone would have bothered to follow-up on the lost fellow in their midst just one more time.

WHY?

There are no easy answers to the question "Why?". In some cases it almost seems that the killers are just seeking attention from the world around them. Why else did Cho send his package of videos and photographs to NBC? In some cases mass murderers seem to be sparked by the news coverage of other recent mass killings. A killer in Port Arthur, Tasmania seems to have been inspired by the killing six months earlier in Dunblane. Cho seems to have been at least partially inspired by the Columbine killers. He certainly would have heard about the Amish school killings just six months ago.

Mental health professionals can speculate all they want about the state of mind of these killers but even the uneducated can determine that these people were not thinking straight while plotting and carrying out these nefarious plots. Other people will look to their gods for answers but the existence of an all-powerful being that does not interfere with the killing of innocent little children causes doubt even among the most devout religious persons. In the end we must consider real world causes in order to stop the next demon from running loose in our schools.

Little changes like locks on classroom doors might be a start. Gun owners and manufacturers control the government in this country so, as usual, we can expect our government to do nothing about the proliferation of firearms not designed for normal hunting. After the killings in Blacksburg, Virginia and Killeen, Texas, gun owners immediately started shouting that people must be allowed to carry concealed weapons. Texas even legalized concealed weapons in response to the Luby Diner Massacre. Good idea, let our schools become the next OK Corral.

Better mental health treatment seems like a good idea but again, our government will not allow everyone to get health care. In this country you must be a financial success to get proper medical care, period, end of discussion.

Stop allowing our children to ingest a television, movie, and video game diet of violence. Unfortunately few parents are brave enough to go that far. Adults consume more sickening media content than children so the business of selling violence can only be expected to grow year after year, with our own money feeding the beast.

So our society is unwilling to restrict gun sales, unwilling to provide medical treatment for everyone, loves to watch violence, and eager to earn advertising dollars by selling weeks of coverage of these and other crimes. It sure looks like our nation just wants these kinds of mass murderers to be free to continue killing as they see fit. Soon a hundred thousand trained killers will be returning from the war for oil in the Middle East. We are already getting prepared for that by having the worst possible veterans health care system in-place when they arrive home. We call ourselves the wealthiest, most powerful nation on earth but we end up looking as weak as the most poorly-run nations in the Third World.

Life in 1907

The U.S. Postal Service has been reliably delivering mail for more than 100 years. Have you ever wondered what people received in their mail one hundred years ago? Probably not, but this author has. Family on the Beach in 1919 16815
In 1907 a large percentage of the population could only purchase certain items through catalogs, there were no shopping malls or Internet stores. The Sears catalog may have been the best known catalog but hundreds of other catalogs took a long time to float from printer to potential customer to barbershop to outhouse.

Actually, public sewers were well under way in many areas back in '07. The list below hints at that fact and others. Roads and sewers required all sorts of equipment to complete. Many names we still recognize today were already peddling wares of one sort or another. The Stanley Rule and Level Company, Merck & Co., Selchow & Righter, and J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company still thrive to this day. The Oliver Typewriter Co. most likely became Olivetti. And so it goes.

The proliferation of catalogs related to agriculture was no surprise. The industrial age was just about to penetrate deep into the rural farmland of America. Of course there were clothing, shoe, toy, and jewelry catalogs, some things never change. Long lists of medications for man and beast were distributed by mail back then.

Have you ever heard of the Maxwell Briscoe Motor Company? You will be pleasantly surprised to see gas engines already in use in applications other than automobiles. Water wheels were still on the market but already carrying the name "turbine."

What follows is a selection from a list of 1,800 catalogs that the U.S. Postal Service delivered to homes and offices during the year 1907. The numbers relate to a longer list of catalogs found here.

See what other interesting things you can learn about life in 1907:

The Future of Don Imus

Don Imus was locked into a contract at CBS, albeit a $10 million per year arrangement for 5 years. However one might expect that satellite radio was ready to offer perhaps 4 times that amount, in the same fashion that they lured the other "shock jock" Stern. One might suspect that this was a pre-planned ploy to get Imus fired from MSNBC and CBS in order to leave him free to go on satellite radio.

New York City 8670

The strategy appears to have back-fired because no major public organization will likely want anything to do with a potato as hot as Don Imus.

Imus may still end up on satellite radio after enough time has passed for the public to forget his recent racist outburst.

For anyone feeling the slightest remorse that a man has lost his job, this man was paid $10 million a year. He probably has not made less than $1 million a year since the 1980's. If he has not been able to save up enough for a comfortable retirement given that amount of money he has only himself to blame.

In any event the forthcoming book Imus is certain to write will sell 10 million copies. There is some truth to that saying that no form of publicity is entirely bad publicity.

Consequences of Don Imus Controversy

In the latest twist to the Don Imus Controversy, NBC News has dropped the Don Imus Show from the lineup at it's MSNBC affiliate. The consequences of Mr. Imus' insensitive comments and the public reaction to those remarks continue to reverberate around the U.S.. Some say there will be a chilling reaction to this affair among the most popular and most controversial public commentators. Does this mean ludicrous figures such as Bill O'Reilly, Howard Stern, and Rush Limbaugh are now going to tone down their harsh rhetoric? Will Ann Coulter be further chastised? Or will the people across the U.S. who actually paid attention to this scandal simply forget about it and get back to talking about the next American Idol winner?

It seems to this author that people were willing to forgive and forget Trent Lott's statements in support of racial segregation.

"When Strom Thurmond ran for president (on a platform that supported racial segregation), we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years, either"

The stained Senator from Mississippi was re-elected after making those comments at Strom Thurmond's birthday party. Senator Lott continues to enjoy strong support from President Bush and most other Republican politicians.

Mr Lott and Mr. Imus have a long history of trash talking, not unlike professional athletes paid millions of dollars a year. People in the United States secretly like knowing the public figures they value the most still hold the racist values they claim to have forsaken.

FORGIVENESS

Repeat offenders asking for forgiveness crowd the airwaves. Are we really to believe Mr. Gibson, Ms Coulter, Mr. Richards, Mr. Limbaugh, and now Mr. Imus when they tell us this has never happened before and will never happen again? They sound too much like the crack addict in the hands of the local police, the CIA and Pentagon torturers in prisons around the world, or the GOP Congressman luring teenage aides into sexual situations.

How can we forgive a repeat offender?

The most astounding act of forgiveness in recent days was demonstrated by The Old Order Amish after a neighbor shot their children at school. In the days soon after they plainly announced that they would not hold the family of the perpetrator to account. They even their condolences to the wife of the man that went on the shooting rampage. In these times where victims relatives immediately calling for the death penalty this act was a gentle reminder that some people actually do practice what they preach.

Now if someone else would recognize how foolish it is to keep an Attorney General that lies to Congress and works only like a puppet on a string.
